The Swiss team of 3 boats practicing for the Worlds in Denmark in just over a weeks time added an international flavour to the event along with a few German boats and the sole British entry of Tim Rush and Andy Short to make a competitive fleet of 39 boats.
The winning Swiss team of Florian Stauffer and Philippe Jacot sailed a consistent series of races and were never out of the the first few over the 10 race series. Phillip's wife Caroline won the final race ably assisted by Rene Betschen and finished first female helm and a very credible forth overall, to make an extremely happy Jacot household.
The leading French team of Xavier Broise and Nicolas Des Jamonieres showed great pace in the windy first few days of the Regatta stamping their authority to win the French Championship by a considerable margin from their fellow countrymen.
Conditions on the racecourse were lively with a steep chop across the course and strong tides to add tactical gains if sailed well.
The French did a fantastic job as hosts, with a reception at Villa Strassburger along with a champagne and seafood opening ceremony. An added attraction in the town was the Buggatti rally marking the 1936 Deauville Grand Prix, which rounded off an excellent event on and off the water.

On the Sunday there was all to race for but with no wind and the temperature rising, it didn't take too long for the sea breeze to kick in and allow the race officer to leave the marks in the same position as yesterday. Race 3 & 4 were again won by Sims, followed by Turnbull. Wilson and Howe were starting to go much faster in 6435 on the Sunday showing great improvement in boat speed compared to the Saturday, so well done to them for their enthusiasm. French Nationals, Deauville, 15-18 July 2010
505 French Nationals, Deauville, 15-18th July 2010
The 505 French Nationals were sailed in amazing conditions of Sun and wind varying on the first day from 20 Knots plus through to 15 knot breezes on the second and third days, and a final day with a launch time of 7am, with light winds of 5-8 Knots. The Swiss team of 3 boats practicing for the Worlds in Denmark in just over a weeks time added an international flavour to the event along with a few German boats and the sole British entry of Tim Rush and Andy Short to make a competitive fleet of 39 boats.

Blackwater Open 26-27 June 2010
Blackwater SC, 26/27 June 2010
Jason Lunn reports
Around 25 boats turned up for the Blackwater open meeting. Unfortunately only 3 were 505s, which was disappointing after the welcome put together by the club. It was always going to be a challenge launching in these tidal waters, but at least you knew it was only mud.
Once out on the race course the sea breeze filled in and it was great. Very close racing between Richard Sims/Simon Wood and Stuart Turnbull/Jason Lunn, with Sims/Wood obtaining the edge in both races. John Wilson/
Adrian Howe from Great Moor SC had a unfortunate capsize causing them to get some of that glorious blackwater mud on the top of the mast and sail.
On the Sunday there was all to race for but with no wind and the temperature rising, it didn't take too long for the sea breeze to kick in and allow the race officer to leave the marks in the same position as yesterday. Race 3 & 4 were again won by Sims, followed by Turnbull. Shotley Open 3-4 July 2010
Shotley SC, 3/4 July 2010
Terry Scutcher & Christain Diebitch on their home waters won the Shotley open meeting convincingly. Sailing in Dovercourt Bay outside Harwich Haven, thirteen 505s had contrasting conditions.
Sailing out on Saturday it was a sunny F3 from the SW with indications that a seabreeze might fill in. Indeed after one general recall the wind eased off and went somewhat left, allowing Rob & Francis to take a port-tack flyer into the softening wind. Terry & Christian pushed further inshore and rounded just ahead. On the run a timely gybe put Rob & Francis apparently back ahead, but Terry & Christian and Harry & Simon held a better line from to leeward and finished the shortened race in that order. Tudor and Nolan finished very close behind in 4th but after that there was a long gap until the tentative sea breeze started to make itself felt. After a postponement, a comparatively straightforward race was held in F3 sea breeze. Russell & Andy got the shifts and tide right, and sailed away.
Sunday was again gorgeously sunny, with a forecast of steadily freshening winds, expected to reach over 20kn in the afternoon. By the start of race 3 it was F4; Terry & Christian won, but there were notable performances by Matt & Daniel and Tudor & Nolan - the latter successfully demonstrating that the short waves favoured pushing lower than normal when reach-running. For race 4 it was a solid F5 with the tide cutting up a nasty chop over the shallow water. Richard & Simon stormed upwind but lost the lead downwind, finishing a worthy 2nd. It was tough going with some capsizes, and by race 5 most had had enough, especially with the threat of yet more wind. In the event, the wind moderated slightly and the sea state was less unsettling, and the remaining few had another splendid sail. Locals Paul & Dave held 3rd for a while after Russell and Andy tripped up on a gybe, but misjudged the downwind lay line on the last lap.
Socially the weekend was excellent, with many local club members joining the barbeque and club breakfast. Thank you all at Shotley SC for your warm welcome and splendidly organised event.

John Driscoll brought his boat "Skippy" from Lyme Regis:
My brother and I had a wonderful weekend at Shotley, for his first time in a 505 and our first sail together for 25 years. Our results are an embarrassment but we had some fabulous sailing - drifting conditions to wind. By Race 4 we checked out and left it to the pros (everyone else). Thanks to a really hospitable club and race marshalls and advice from the fleet.
Stone SC, 12/13 June 2010
Stone SC gave a warm welcome to thirteen 505s and twelve Hornets at the weekend. Saturday was F2-3 with gusts F4, from the NE, with shifts and slants and holes. Conditions were similar on Sunday, except that the wind had swung to the SW. No-one got it all right, and there were a lot of place changes, but generally the faster boats won through in the end.
All the lower boats, including newcomers John and Adrian from Great Moor SC, and especially Bobbie and Tony, had moments that they will remember, mixing it with the leading bunch, or at least the main bunch. The downwind legs were usually the ones that sorted out the rankings, with the downwind angles difficult to optimise in the variable wind and sometimes strong current. Tudor and Nolan, recently joining us from the Merlin class, showed good speed at times, and Greg and Ollie from Southwold zoomed into contention spectacularly on one run.
But it was Andy and Tim who dominated overall, with consolation race wins going to Terry and Christian and Russ and Andy. Altogether a very good weekend.

Tony Merry gave his account:
This is the first time we have sailed on the East Coast and we were not sure what to expect at Stone. Situated on the River Blackwater, one can conjure up an image of a narrow tidal river with areas of shallow water dotted with small islands, to be avoided at all costs! Well, it's not actually anything like that.

Please pay by bankers' order; it makes it easier for everyone. I attach the forms (or you can set it up on line and advise Terry by email: laser505@fsmail.net ). Otherwise, cheques to the membership secretary, please: Terry Scutcher, 52 Kingsland Avenue, Shotley, Ipswich, IP9 1NB.
For those who are not yet members, please join. Theoretically you have to be a member for your boat to be an International 505. The class would not exist without the association, and it sould certainly not be an ISAF International Class. The subscription is modest. £5 goes to the International Association (of which British members are automatically members), who maintain the class internationally, certification, measurement equipment, etc. and the ISAF fee. Almost all the balance goes in advertising the class in UK, the cost of exhibiting at the Dinghy Show, and the RYA fee.
